Building The Future of Thai Cannabis Today
Dear Friends of Cannabis in Thailand,
Cannabox is thrilled to invite you to the second round of our groundbreaking event series, Building The Future of Thai Cannabis Today. Our next event, Supply Chain & Network Strategies, is on Saturday, September 16th at the iconic Monkey Pod in Bangkok.
Our first event was out of this world – thanks to your overwhelming support and enthusiasm for the cannabis community in Thailand.
We felt the power of connection as we explored the theme of permissionless innovation in the absence of regulations. Now, we are ready to create the next episode in our series — unraveling the secrets of successful supply chain and network strategies.
Starting at 6 PM, our panel of experts will share their insights, experiences and best practices – providing guidance and inspiration as they describe navigating this dynamic landscape. There will be a Q &A afterwards so, please, ask questions.
But wait, there’s more. Starting at 5:00, you can watch a multi-media, one-of-a-kind workshop on the cutting edge of the CBD sector in Thailand: a narrative by the country’s foremost authority on the subject, Dr. CBD.
Before and after the presentation and the panel, it’s time for what we call “alt canna networking”. Doors open at 3 PM. The kitchen and service bar of this most remarkable Thai restaurant will be open for the event. We believe that the connections we make in these local venues with these special people will run deep and the doors that open with these new relationships will truly lead to the future of the industry.
By attending this event, you will play a vital role in shaping the future of our industry, while connecting with fellow enthusiasts, cultivators, budtenders, and industry professionals who share your passion. We call these events “happenings” and believe that the overall vibe of the event is unique in its openness, honesty and authenticity.
Together, we are the cannabis community in Thailand. Together, we got the power; apart we get the pow-wow. Come on, let’s make history together and build a cannabis industry that is the envy of the world.
Warm regards,
Your friends, partners, creators and delivery providers at Cannabox.
Background
What is a vertical supply chain? In a traditional supply chain, various entities collaborate to move products or services from the source to the end consumer.
However, in a vertical supply chain, a single organization assumes control over multiple stages of the production process — cultivation, processing, distribution, and even retail operations. This integration allows for greater oversight and control, streamlining the entire supply chain within one entity.
The use of vertical supply chains in Thai cannabis enables companies to maintain a higher level of quality control throughout the production process, ensuring that the end product meets standards and regulatory requirements. Vertical integration allows for improved efficiency and cost management, as companies can optimize resource allocation and eliminate dependencies on external suppliers.
On the other hand, vertical supply chains also have their limitations. One significant drawback is the potential lack of flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic market.
Vertical integration requires substantial investments in infrastructure, expertise, and resources, which may hinder the ability to pivot quickly in response to changing consumer demands or regulatory shifts.
Relying solely on a vertical supply chain model can restrict collaboration with external partners, limiting access to specialized knowledge, technology, or distribution networks.
Given the evolving nature of the cannabis industry, it is crucial to consider alternative models alongside vertical supply chains. One such alternative is the adoption of horizontal supply networks.
In a horizontal supply network, companies collaborate and specialize in specific areas of the value chain while forming strategic partnerships with complementary entities. This model allows for flexibility, leveraging the expertise and resources of multiple players within the cannabis ecosystem.
Horizontal supply networks can foster innovation, collaboration, and risk-sharing among participants. For instance, farmers specializing in cannabis cultivation can partner with processors who excel in extraction and product formulation, while distributors and retailers focus on reaching the end consumers. This networked approach enables each participant to concentrate on their core competencies, leading to increased efficiency, market reach, and product diversity.
In our context, both vertical supply chains and horizontal supply networks have their merits. As the industry continues to grow and mature, it is essential to strike a balance between control and collaboration. Embracing vertical supply chains can provide a solid foundation for quality control, cost management, and compliance. However, complementary horizontal partnerships can unlock opportunities for specialization, knowledge exchange, and market expansion.
By learning from the experiences of cannabis industries worldwide, including the thriving market in North America, Thailand can chart its own unique path forward. Studying successful cases of vertical supply chains, such as those seen in North American cannabis companies, can offer valuable insights into quality control, standardization, and regulatory compliance. Simultaneously, exploring the benefits of horizontal supply networks can inspire collaboration and innovation within Thailand’s cannabis ecosystem.
The cannabis industry in Thailand has the opportunity to leverage both vertical supply chains and horizontal supply networks to navigate the complexities of this rapidly evolving sector.
Striking the right balance between control and collaboration will be essential for long-term success.
*******************
We will have the opportunity to hear from experts and industry leaders who will shed light on their experiences with vertical supply chains, horizontal supply networks, and other approaches within the cannabis industry. Their insights will help us understand the practical implications, benefits, and challenges associated with these models.
As the panelists give their views and contribute to the discussion, I encourage you to actively engage, ask questions, and share your own perspectives. Together, let’s explore the potential of supply chains and supply networks in the cannabis industry, can you identify opportunities for growth, collaboration, and innovation?
